I have been surfing, Surf Life Saving & going to the beach for as long as I can remember.
I didn’t start competing as a surfer until I joined my first Boardriders club in 1991 & found success almost immediately, getting results from my very first comp.
Winning my local age divisions regularly & often progressing through the Sunshine Coast Regional competitions to gain selection for the hotly contested Queensland State Titles.
After sitting the Surfing Australia Level one coaching course in 1997 I began working for Surfing Queensland, teaching their clients how to surf & training my club members for national team competitions.
I also started judging at Surfing Queensland’s Regional & State Circuit competitions about the same time.
Sunshine Surf Coaching was originally conceived in 1999 on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland as Sunshine Surf Tours.
It was intended to be mostly a surfing tours company to take people up & down the east coast of Australia, between Angourie in New South Wales & Double Island point just north of Noosa on the Sunshine Coast.
But also to teach beginners how to surf & appreciate the surfing lifestyle
Things changed in 2000 & I found myself living in NZ.
In 2001, I started teaching beginners to surf here in Waihi Beach & working for SNZ as a judge on their National Competition Circuit.
It was during my first year of judging here that I identified the need for young competitive surfers to improve their skills & competition strategies.
So was born “SUNSHINE SURF COACHING”.
Since 2001 I have taught over 1200 people how to surf including several large school groups who return with a new bunch of kids each year.
During this time I have also coached some of New Zealand’s best junior competition surfers, & become one of Surfing New Zealand’s most senior Head Judges, second only to my mentor & national legend Iain “Ratso” Buchanan.
This year I am expanding my business to incorporate my original idea of running surf tours to some of New Zealand’s best surfing destinations.
